R.I.P, Irene
Our neighbor Irene Harris passed away last night. She was a very sweet lady, 91 years-old, who lived next door with her daughter Lanell. They have a beautiful flower garden in their yard that I’ve quite enjoyed, and was Irene’s pride and joy. It was somewhat unique for being planted in a swimming pool they filled in when they bought the house some 8-9 years ago. They still referred to it as the “pool”, not the “garden”.
They’re very friendly, and were the first in the neighborhood to welcome us when we moved in several years ago. They’re always the best source for the latest neighborhood gossip, too ![]()
We have a number of elderly neighbors, and have to admit we’ve had a few scares when we’ve seen ambulances come near by, but this is the first of them to pass. I’m not too sad for Irene, because she wasn’t exactly taken before her time and her ailments were making her life pretty difficult, but do I wish the best to her and her family…and hope Lanell doesn’t take it too hard.

Our next door neighbor Lanell Harris died sometime last night or this morning. Her nephew came over in the afternoon to visit and found her.
When we first moved to this neighborhood several years ago, Lanell was to first to come over and welcome us. She lived next door with her mother, who passed sometime back.
Lanell’s been quite lonely since her mother’s been gone, sometimes we were quite worried about her. She doesn’t get around well ( uses a walker ), and has had a lot of general mobility and pain problems that have kept her activity pretty restricted.
We thought things were looking up for her recently, because she had signed up for an apartment in a new retirement community being built in the area, and put her house on the market. This would have given her access to more help and much needed companionship — it’s a shame she won’t be able to go on to enjoy that.
Lanell was an interesting woman. She’d speak her mind at a whim, and was very opinionated — but she was always very sweet to us and others in the neighborhood. We’re sorry to see her go.

I’m sorry to hear that - I remember you speaking about her on several occasions. I know you and Katie also looked after her, which I really admire - most people wouldn’t bother or be willing to give up the time. But that’s just the way the two of you are - she may have been neglected/forgotten by her immediate family, but thankfully she had the two of you.

Well, with the circumstances of her death, we wish we could have done more…but we did try to be good neighbors.
