O, Brother…
We went to see O Brother, Where Art Thou? Friday night at our new local stadium style seating theater.
Firstly, the theater was nice. Not as nice as the AMC Multiplex at Grapevine Mills mall, but much nicer than the existing, aging theaters in Denton…and only 10 minutes away, not 30. I think we’ll actually be going to movies quite a bit more now, which makes me happy.
Secondly, O Brother was excellent. I’ve always liked the Coen brother’s movies…particularly their more recent efforts, like The Big Lebowski and Fargo. They are never afraid to be odd, but never odd without reason. O Brother is an adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey. I’m way too rusty on Homer provide any assessment of it’s fidelity to that work, but with or without that factor, the film was entertaining and thoughtful throughout…with lots of good old-timey music — which I’m a sucker for. Very good performances from a number of members of the Coen’s usual stable of actors, and George Clooney.
It even got “Man of Constant Sorrow” stuck in my wife’s head for the last several days, and she usually turns her nose up at bluegrass.
