Mac OS X 10.1 & the Apple Store
Just got back from my first visit to the new Apple store in North Dallas. Went to get my free copy of the 10.1 update, which they were handing out in limited supply this morning. Got there at right around 10am when the store opened…to find about 500-600 people there!
Glad to see so [...]

Jim’s new site
My good friend Jim Saah has a real nice redesign for his photography biz up and running. The design was done by Kim Bieler.

New conversant features
Some more cool new Conversant features went online this week. The #insertQuery message lets you embed template rendered query results any in a site, and default query caching for Advanced Query Pages speeds things up quite a bit.
Seth’s done some cool architechtural work in the searching and indexing area, which has improved performance of [...]

RE: ARGH!
DSL is back up. Seems my ISP is now Waymark.net. At least they’re still local. We’ll see how it goes.
Seems they bought out my ISP, and in the transition process Verizon failed to credit their payment against the old ISP’s circuit charges…thus the disconnect. They resolved the disconnect yesterday, but some [...]

ARGH!
Well, it seems my ISP went under yesterday…taking my DSL connection with it. Still waiting on independent confirmation on that, but Verizon’s DSL help line says “Directlink customers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area may be experiencing connection problems due to a billing issue.” Directlink ain’t answering the phone…and their automated machine’s sales end [...]

Babies, week 31
Just keeps getting closer. Another OB visit this morning. Things look great! Only catches are Kt has to start taking some iron to keep her blood count up, and needs to eat a bit less carbs.
On the downside, we just found out the diaper service we were going to use has decided [...]

Mac OS X 10.1
Mac OS X 10.1 is launching Saturday. I think I may make this my first excuse to head out to the new Apple store near Dallas. Really looking forward to having this on my TiBook.

Ultrasound this morning
Mid-week 30 ultrasound this morning. The twins are doing fine. They’re actually measuring slightly ahead of schedule, at about 3 lbs. 10 oz…and they are both very close to same size, which is great!
Katie’s grimacing a bit more as she tries to move around, but is holding up really good. She’s not [...]

War on terrorism?
The rhetoric is flying in Washington, but in their typical fashion, the politicians are throwing the gray that constitutes this “war” into a centrifuge and hoping it comes out cleanly separated into black and white.
Brian Carnell makes some excellent points about the historic context of Pakistan and Afghanistan, which are quickly becoming the center of [...]

Happyman’s Eye
Our dog Happyman has been battling what we though we’re eye infections in his left eye most of the summer. We’ve treated him with steriod drops, and it’s cleared up, only to come back shortly thereafter.
We went out to the Veteranary Opthamologist this afternoon, and found that Happyman seems to have Pannus, a degenerative [...]

Reasons not to name your kid “Mike”
We have a few Mikes at work. I actually overheard this conversation today on our in-house radios that are used to communicate with people in manufacturing and shipping…
Mike1: “Hey, Mike”
Mike2: “Yea”
Mike1: “This is Mike”
Mike2: “Yea”
Mike1: “Where’s Mike?”
Mike2: “Which Mike?”

Black boxes
Interesting segment on TechTV’s Screensavers show this morning ( I guess it originally aired Friday night — but I always watch it instead of the news in the morning ), on How Black Boxes Work.

Baby shower
We had a baby shower yesterday. Had a really nice time — thanks to everyone who came and brought such great gifts! ![]()
One particularly odd thing, however. Twins usually come a little early and weight a little less, so one thoughtful friend got us a couple extra small outfits. For those not [...]

We support the Taliban?
Geez…this is incredible. As recently as May, we were promising $42 mil in aid to the Taliban in Afganistan — a government we don’t even officially recognize.
