Learning day

It’s a learning day for me today. I’m working at home while the floor crew works on tearing out and redoing the wood floor we had done 2 weeks ago ( Long story, I’ll post separately about that some day ). I’m also working setting up my new work computer, which arrived yesterday…but [...]

Turtle save

Had my first turtle save of the season this morning. I work out in the country, and the two lane, 60 mph road I drive out on is not very friendly to small creatures. Some mornings it looks like the entire small mammal population is about to get wiped out there’s so much [...]

It’s a mandolin

It’s amazing how few people recognize a mandolin. I brought mine in to work last week to practice some at lunch while the weather’s nice. Since then it has been called a ukulele, a fiddle and a “what’s that?” too many times to count. For those not familar, this is an A-style [...]

Weirdest virus

I got the weirdest virus email this morning. Subject “TEMPLATE”, attachment “SETUP.exe” — standard enough. But the body of the message was the HTML of a page off my UNo MAS site, from 1999!! It had the old look of the site and old content, and broken images links, but it was [...]

RE: Conversant ignored!

The release of Conversant yesterday has gotten a lot of attention…interestingly, none of it coming from UserLand, or it’s CEO Dave Winer.
I think Steve comments accurately on the topic. It’s just weird. It’s certainly extremely unbusiness-like. It’s also not an oversight, it’s definitely intentional.

RE: The big plan

We’ve been slow to post pictures of the ongoing housework, sorry about that…here’s one of the Slate fireplace and built-in shelf. I did the facing on the shelf this weekend…it now needs a door ( bottom cabinet ), and paint. The slate still needs a couple of coats of sealer…but it’s moving along.
Note [...]

Conversant released!

After years of effort ( by myself and many others ) Macrobyte Resources has prepared the first public developer release of Conversant. Conversant is the software that runs this site…and hundreds of others through Macrobyte’s hosting and consulting services ( see, Free-Conversant ). While it’s always been our intention to release the software [...]

Beautiful weekend

It was a beautiful weekend here in Texas. Both Saturday and Sunday were sunny and in the 70’s…really cool for us this close to Summer. We took Keegan and Asher on their first visit to the Zoo Saturday ( pictures coming soon ), and worked on the house. It was great! [...]

Anti-Drug Ads a Flop

Took a few days for me to get around to posting about this one — but it’s just too much. America’s drug czar both admits the $1 billion spent on ads in recent years was completely wasted and asks for more money for ads at the same time! Yikes. Get a clue.

Weblog calendars

Seth and I had an exchange regarding the placement of weblog calendars on news pages this morning, and he suggested I post my comments regarding the issue. For those not up on the terminology, weblogs are news pages like this one. Post data is the organizing principle behind a weblog, and thus a [...]

PETA and the NCAA

PETA successfully lobbied the NCAA to stop using real leather basketballs in their tournaments next year. I don’t really have strong feelings about this one way or the other, I’m sure the non-leather balls are just as good…I do think it’s hardly a very important issue.
I really don’t think it’s saving any animals any [...]

Gateway 600x

I just ordered a new laptop for work, it’s a Gateway 600x. Short story: 1.5 P4-M, 15.7″ SXGA @ 1280 x 1024, 2 drives, CD-RW/DVD, ATI Radeon 7500/64meg Video, etc. Big and heavy.
I’m afraid the Dell Inspiron 5000 I’ve been using for the last couple years is not keeping up with the demands [...]
