Conversant released!

After years of effort ( by myself and many others ) Macrobyte Resources has prepared the first public developer release of Conversant. Conversant is the software that runs this site…and hundreds of others through Macrobyte’s hosting and consulting services ( see, Free-Conversant ). While it’s always been our intention to release the software to other developers, it’s been difficult to find the time to prepare such a release.

I’m really looking forward to seeing what other Frontier and Radio UserLand developers have to say about the software — it’s easily the biggest and best software ever built on the platform, IMHO. I’ve got more code in Conversant than any other software project I’ve worked on…and while there’s always bugs and room for improvement, I’m really proud of my contributions…largely because of the great team of people I’ve worked with at Macrobyte.

The release of Conversant yesterday has gotten a lot of attention…interestingly, none of it coming from UserLand, or it’s CEO Dave Winer.

I think Steve comments accurately on the topic. It’s just weird. It’s certainly extremely unbusiness-like. It’s also not an oversight, it’s definitely intentional.

Userland’s reluctance to mention the release of Conversant will come back to bite them.

I’m more worried about it coming back to bite Macrobyte, frankly…because such activity undermines confidence in the platform as a whole…and developers have a symbiotic relationship with the platform.
