Spiderman, Spiderman

I’m finally getting to go see Spiderman this afternoon. I’m excited. I’ve been really looking forward to this movie, but movies don’t really fit in our schedule lately…so I’ve had to be patient. Spiderman was one of the few comic books I bought regularly when I was young, and I was a huge fan of the original ‘67-’70 saturday morning show.

I’m also really excited that the original show will be coming back on the air Saturday mornings on the ABC Family Channel. It’s been out of circulation for quite a while now. Now, if I can just figure out how to get Kt to let me watch it instead of Trading Spaces on Saturday morning, I’ll be all set.

I loved it. Was not dissapointed at all. There’s a few things I think could have been handled better plot-wise, but they were really minor. They didn’t quite capture Spidey’s sense of humor, and the web-slinging-as-genetic-mutation switcheroo was a definite mistake. In fact, the change to the basic setup of his mutation kind of bothered me, I guess.

They did make the point that Peter Parker was a really smart scientific mind, but then changed the story in such a way as to make that meaningless. In the original, the spider that bit him was one he was experimenting with — not just a random event on a field trip, and the fact that he invented the web-slinging device to augment his powers made sense…he wasn’t just a mutant, he was also smart — a la Batman.

Ok, now I sound like I’m bitching…I’ll stop. It really was a well done and entertaining movie with a great pace throughout.

    Greg!
First of all, you are still the man! It’s been way too long since I’ve seen you. Most of the time, I’m pretty worthless when it comes to information, but I do know that in the first Spiderman, Peter Parker was attending an exhibit when the spider bit him. It wasn’t a project he was working on, although he was a real ‘brain.’ You can read a portion of the original here.

I didn’t want you posting any erroneous information. Take care, buddy! Hope to see you soon.

Ah, I stand corrected, although my original point holds up — that it wasn’t an oligatory school field trip — but a special interest science exhibit which he went out of his way to go to.

Come on down to Texas anytime, man. Not sure when I’m headed up that way again…probably next year sometime.
