NBA draft

The NBA draft was last night…we had it on the TV off and on. It’s not really all that interesting, but I like to see where some of the college players I’ve watched end up.

I was glad to see my Maryland boys do pretty well. Juan Dixon went to the Wizards with the 17th pick. I think that’s great. Many thought he’d fall out of the first round, because it’s not really clear where he’ll play position-wise in the NBA — but he’s a real winner with a great work ethic and strong sense for the game, so I think he’ll contribute. He’s a real hero in Maryland, too, so it’s nice he’ll be staying close to home.

Chris Wilcox went #6 to the Clippers, and Lonny Baxter got picked up by the Bulls in the second round. Lonny’s got a lot of stength and good post moves, he should have a good career at power forward off-the-bench in the NBA. Wilcox will be a star in 3-4 years.

Byron Mouton didn’t make it in. He’s another really hard worker, but is in that tough spot the NBA kind of ignores in the draft, being too small to play forward in the NBA like he did in college, but not really have the shooting skills to shift to the two guard spot.

Lots of foreign players in this draft, who I really don’t know squat about. The language barrier must make for some interesting practices.
