XSL:FO

Everything you ever wanted to know about XSL:FO. Probably more than you ever wanted to know, for most people.

Safari, so good.

I’ve made Safari my default browser for now. Didn’t expect to much care about it — but it is very lean and fast. I like fast. Don’t know if this is a permanent change, but I’m pretty happy with it so far.

So long, Big K

Our Big K (K-mart) store up the street is on the list of those closing. It’s not far from our house, but I must admit I hardly ever shop there, so I won’t miss it much. Mostly, I’m not excited about having a big empty store right up the street.

Help Seth ride for Cancer

My good friend Seth Dillingham need to gather $2,500 in sponsorship to ride in the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge later this year. The Challenge is a cross-state bike ride benefiting the Dana-Farber Cancer
Institute. I’m going to help out…any other takers?

Cryptonomicon

I’m taking another stab at reading some fiction. I’m about 50 pages into Stephenson’s Cryptonomicon. Very rich writing that’s easy to get into. Of course, I’d make better progress if I could stay awake past 10pm.

iPod?

The main barrier stopping me from getting an iPod is going away. Wires. I hate wires.

First batches of LPs for sale

I’ve got up the first four batches of records for sale at eBay. These aren’t particularly interesting batches, but I thought I’d start slow and see what sort of response I get. The batches are:

Five Johnny Cash LPs
Four Brian Eno LPs
Seven Simon and Garfunkel LPs
Six David Bowie LPs

Gov. Ryan

I applaud Illinois Gov. George Ryan for making one of boldest political moves I can remember this week in commuting the death sentences of everyone on Illinois’ death row. I hope his comments are enough to get more people thinking about the essential problems of the death penalty.
So many people have been cleared by [...]

Winter mix

Having some snow flurries today — but mostly a winter mix of sleet and rain and snow. I miss snow. The ground will usually get turned white once a year down here in Texas, but it’s never enough to do anything with. And, of course, sledding is somewhat difficult when you have [...]

Back to the Movies

After a year off from the movies ( not intentional, we just never had time ), we’ve started renting some again since we got the el-cheapo DVD player for X-mas. What we’ve been discovering is, Kt and I are a pretty tough audience to please.
Friday night we watched Minority Report. Visually stunning, and [...]

Mom’s a winner!

My mom, Sue Pierce, had an award winning quilt in this year’s Visions 2002 art quilt show. They’ve posted photos of the winners…scroll down to “The Williamson Family Memorial Award”. Nice job, Mom!

Estimating shipping

New software challenge at work…estimated shipping costs. This could be a bit of a bear to wrestle with. Relatively easy if you are shipping homogeneous product, but we’re not. We’ve got things that weight very little, and things that weight a lot, things that are very small and very large. No [...]

Safari

Here’s a first post from Safari, Apple’s new browser. I think I’ll be sticking with Mozilla…but it is fast.

Records…or vinyl, or whatever you call it these days

I’ve been starting to think it’s time to sell my vinyl records. This is not a decision I come to easily, but I have to face facts. I don’t even have my turntable setup currently…and when I did, I never played them. Mostly, I guess, I’ve become slave to the convenience of [...]
