Matrix Reloaded - John Gaeta

Steve points to a great article/interview about the special effects on the new Matrix movie. John Gaeta, the special effects director, was one of my best friends in college…so I love to read about what he’s doing these days.

It’s funny to read his story from a journalistic perspective and see where there are overlaps…like, #4 on his list of “movies that rocked my world” was Powaqqatsi, which we saw together on the IMAX screen of the Natural History Museum in New York…and I use to drive up with friends from DC to Massachusetts for parties at the house he and his co-workers were living in while working at Mass.Illusion.

Funny, he didn’t mention the time we got arrested scouting filming locations on Roosevelt Island. ;-)

Greg, thanks for linking to my Wired article about your old buddy John. It makes me really happy that an old friend of John’s was able to catch up with what he’s doing now by reading it. I thought you might be amused by John’s description of those Mass.illusion parties, which I wasn’t able to use in the article, alas, but which are contained in some out-takes from our interview which I posted on a Matrix fan site called The Last Free City. (Scroll down.) Enjoy!
