RIP, Sam Phillips

sunrecords.gif
Sam Phillips, one of the most important figures in American music, passed away at age 80. Sam founded Sun Records. Sam discovered, recorded and distributed artists such as: Howlin’ Wolf, Johnny Cash, Rufus Thomas, B.B. King, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis — and, yes, Elvis. He typically actually paid his artists, too. Pretty unique for the ’50s.

It would be hard to overestimate the influence of this man on modern music and popular culture.
