The Soul of a Man

Wow. I just finished watching The Soul of a Man, the second installment of PBS’s series “The Blues”, directed by Wim Wenders. It was every bit as strong as Scorcese’s opening night film was weak.

Wenders meandered through portraits of Skip James and J.B. Lenoir — two relatively obscure but influential blues men — with incredible grace. It was documentary and art, and was very touching. He really let the music take the forefront…mixing original recordings with excerpts of renditions by modern performers without ever seeming forced.

I hope this bodes well for the remainder of the series, as I was quite dissapointed with the opening night documentary by Scorsese which was, at best, average.
