UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

My windows laptop is current on hiatus. I used it at home Friday night, then Saturday morning it was dead. Gets as far as the the XP splash screen then hits a blue screen of death, with the message, “UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME”. Sounds like it may be a corrupt boot sector, and may be repairable. I hope so…I don’t really feel like restoring that machine at the moment.

Right now it’s booted off the XP CD and is running “chkdsk /r” in the recovery console. Wish me luck.

If you can’t repair it, buy R-Studio NTFS. <http://www.r-tt.com/> I’ve
used it on multiple NTFS(5) drives that were not repairable, due to
viruses or whatever, to retrieve my files off the disk. The partitions
don’t even need to be mountable.

    Worth every penny.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the tip…seems I managed to get it going enough to get off what I needed. I don’t much feel like wiping and reinstalling, but I think that’s what I’ll do. The machine really needed it anyway, I’ve just been procrastinating (for about 7 months!).

It’s just so much fun setting up Windows machines. ;-)
