Dantz sucks

I’ve used Retrospect as my backup solution for 8 years. On both macs and windows.

Over the years, Dantz has steadily increased the cost of the software, and made the licensing more convoluted, but I’ve kept up with the “multi-server” licensing because I felt the were really making the product better.

But today I’m really ticked. I just “upgraded” from Retrospect 6.0/Win to Retrospect 6.5/Win, for $500…and find that they have removed one of the features I use regularly and are now selling it as an “add-on” pack. The feature is called “Proactive Backup” — on the Mac version the equivalent is “Backup Servers” — which allow you to have agents setup that watch for laptops and other sources that aren’t always connected and backs them up when they appear on the network.

Oddly, the proactive backup I had setup is still running, but I can’t create any others.

I sent them an e-mail on Thursday about it (since I gave up on being on hold) and haven’t gotten a response. That make me that much more ticked. I’m sorry, but if you are going to remove important features from software in an upgrade, you really need to go to great lengths to make sure your customers are aware of that so they can evaluate the upgrade properly.

Hey maybe you can help me with something. I am trying to set up retrospect 6.5 on a network, and I have a few questionsl. Is it possible to have the program just back up a folder on each machine, and not back up the whole hard drive. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

when selecting destinations for the backup script, use the
“Subdirectory” button in the selection dialog to define the folder you
    wish to back.

I am sorry, I’m an idiot…. I am trying to refurbish this program that someone else already set up. When they set it up they had it set to backup the whole hard drive, and not just the files we needed. Now we have a 200 gig hard drive full. So I have been given the task of re-doing this system. We plan to just delete the old backed up file and start over again with just te necessary file and compressing them. So basically I am not very familiar with this software, and I do not completly understand what you are telling me to do. Again I am sorry and I just found your website searching on google, and if you could be more specific as to what I need to do I would love it. Thanks a lot.
