Save the Bottom Line

I hope they save the Bottom Line. I didn’t see too many shows there in my New York days, mostly because it was a bit pricey for my student budget, but I did see a number of shows that I quite enjoyed — and it’s a place with a lot of music history, which is not easily replaced.

I’m probably missing a few, but the shows I know I saw there include: John Cale, Richard Thompson (solo acoustic), Lucinda Williams, and Gil-Scott Heron. Despite the few shows I actually went to, it was a big presence in my life. I walked by it everyday while at NYU and was always drooling over the upcoming shows that I couldn’t afford to attend.

Well, I just followed up, and the effort to save the Bottom Line Cabaret was unsuccessful. Too bad. My old alma-mater, NYU, ate it up. Doesn’t really surprise me, it’s location already seemed hopelessly overwhelmed by the university when I was there in the 80s.

Made me pang for my NY days a little. In general support of the music history of the city, I went over to CBGB’s site and ordered a t-shirt. I actually worked at CB’s for a semester or so while I was going to school. I wonder if good old Hilly (the founder) it still sitting at that same cluttered desk near the entrance.
