Chocolate Ice Cream and Onions

I think I’m going to go to Microsoft’s Security Sumit on Friday. To paraphrase one of Simon Cowell’s funnier comments from American Idol last night, Microsoft and Security go together like chocolate ice cream and onions. Yummy!

Kt posted a photo album from last weekend’s camping trip.

Flaming Lips online Jukebox

This is cool. Listen to the whole record. Neat graphics. More record labels should be doing this. (Oh yea, it’s a really good record, too.)

Gov. Rick Perry uses Plone

Texas Govenor Rick Perry’s website uses Plone. Now, if he’d just propose using Open Source software to reduce education costs, instead of stupid things like funding education by expanding gambling.

The Bottom Line + CBGB

Well, I just followed up, and the effort to save the Bottom Line Cabaret was unsuccessful. Too bad. My old alma-mater, NYU, ate it up. Doesn’t really surprise me, it’s location already seemed hopelessly overwhelmed by the university when I was there in the 80s.
Made me pang for my NY days a [...]

X-CD-Roast

I haven’t updated Toast since OS 9. I rarely need more that what I do in the Finder/Retrospect/iTunes as far as burning goes, but it is nice to have a utility around to do a straight duplicate in one step — since I have two CD drives hooked up. Can’t justify the cost [...]

Lawn mowing

I mowed the lawn at our new house for the first time last night. Actually, I had mowed the front yard once already, but this was the first time I’d done the whole thing. The experience differed somewhat from the mowing experience at our old house, in that there was grass involved — [...]

RE: American Schmaltz

Ok, I gotta give Barry props. Yes, his songs were still schmaltz, but they updated arrangements for the American Idol finalists and it wasn’t that bad. Mostly. "Mandy" still was painful.

American Schmaltz

It’s Barry Manilow night on American Idol. I thought Neil Sedaka was a bit of a stretch last year, but Barry Manilow? I wonder who’s going to get stuck slogging through “I Can’t Smile Without You”.

Camping

Had a great weekend camping out at Possum Kingdom. Gotta get that outdoor life in before it gets too hot down here!

Oh, boy

I just listened to Bush’s press conference from last night. Now I know why he doesn’t do more press conferences. That was bad, he mostly stumbled…and sometimes sounded just plain odd.
It’s no secret that I’m not a Bush fan, but jeez — this guy is our President?

Movie: School of Rock

Kt and I watched School of Rock last night. It was a lot of fun. Formulaic, predictable, etc….yes. But a lot of fun, none the less. I was impressed that they cast kids that all actually played the instruments…and rocked!

NPR Search Engine Series

If you don’t know much about search engines beyond simply knowing you should use Google, I recommend you listen to the Search Engine Series of reports NPR’s Morning Edition is airing this week. It’s pretty basic stuff, but good to know and understand a little about the history of search engines and the business [...]

Python on Windows without prompt window

This seems like it should be a no brainer, but I can’t seem to figure out how to execute a python script on Windows without a command prompt window getting opened. It exits as soon as the script is done, but I don’t really want it to show at all. Anyone know how [...]

Darn that Seth Dillingham

Seth more or less challenged me to take a 80’s music trivia-like test yesterday. Well, I took it this morning. I did even worse than him, 38.5 — which isn’t really fair because if I resubmitted my answers claiming I was born after Woodstock (which he was) I tied him. But that [...]
