Chocolate Ice Cream and Onions

I think I’m going to go to Microsoft’s Security Sumit on Friday. To paraphrase one of Simon Cowell’s funnier comments from American Idol last night, Microsoft and Security go together like chocolate ice cream and onions. Yummy! ;-)

I never posted a followup about the Microsoft Security Summit. What a bust. I only made it through the keynote and half the first session in the developer track. The developer session was suppose to be on how to develop secure applications. All it was about was repeating over and over that you need to think about security to develop a secure application. Whohoo! A true revelation. All I could think the whole time was that it seem like a bit of a waste to do that much thinking about security if you were going to roll out your app behind IIS, anyway.

The most revealing moment of the whole shebang was during the keynote. They were demonstrating some of the new security features being added to IE in the new XP service pack. Among them was a built-in popup blocker. The crowd (of about 1,000 IT professionals) gasped in awe, like it was the most stunning and wonderful idea. I expect that the masses who are shipped a machine with IE never look for something better…but I was just plain amazed that a whole room full of computer geeks that must spend a tremendous amount of time on the web, still use IE on a day to day basis. It’s a lousy browser!
