Tough week to be a turtle

We had significant flooding in the area last week. We also have a significant population of red eared slider turtles, which have now been rudely relocated by the flood waters to places that are far from home, and often now quite far from water since the flooding receded.

Net result? Lots of turtles wandering around looking for bodies of water, and lots of roads for them to cross. I’ve saved two actively trying to cross the road on my way to work, and would have saved another this morning if a woman hadn’t already stopped ahead of me to take care of it.

I’ve seen at least 8-10 along my route that were not so lucky. It’s a shame. They are a handsome turtle. Most of the ones I’ve seen this week have a shell length of about 10-12″, they’re not little guys.
