Doom 3

I’ve been playing Doom 3 for a couple of weeks now. It is easily the most incredible looking game I’ve ever played. The game engine is incredible. It’s also downright creepy. The use of sound effects and lighting are great, and I literally get the chills while playing it…which is a feeling I haven’t gotten from a horror film in many years.

That said, it’s also a pretty boring game thus far. I’d guess I’m about 1/2 way through the missions, and it’s just plain redundant. O boy, another dark hallway! Choices? AI? not here. Very linear and the bad guys are stupid. They are zombies, so I guess I should go easy on them, but I’d like to see some challenging responses to my actions to keep me engaged.

So, on the whole, I’m really looking forward to other games that license this engine coming out in the near future!

    Surely it’s intended for multi-player?

doom 3 has a multi-player mode, but it’s very much of an after-thought.
i’m sure there will be great multi-player games based on this engine.

doom 3 attempts to stay true to it’s legacy, which pre-dates
    significant multi-player FPS games.

Another note for those who may play Doom 3. With the except of the Marine Zombies who are armed with machine guns, I have yet to run into any beast that isn’t best dispatched with the good old shotgun. That is, assuming, you are deft at moving in a FPS game, because you will need to do some dodging to get close enough to some of the creatures to use the shotgun…particularly true for the skeleton dudes with heat seeking rockets. If you have lead feet, you may end up relying on the plasma gun a bit more.

Finally got around to finishing Doom 3 over the weekend. I wanted to follow up on my earlier comments just to say that the game got much better as it near the end. The actual combat was still not all that interesting, but the visuals kept kicking it up a notch, getting much more surreal and making it a lot of fun to play. The final battle was a dissapointment. I killed the boss in my first effort in about 45-60 seconds of play time.

That final battle’s always tough. I admit I’ve played many a game where it was just way to hard and was frustrating — but at the same time, I don’t want a push over. In Doom’s case there was a trick to killing the boss, but one that had hinted at over and over in the game, so it was a no-brainer.
