Lightning Protection

Got the guys from work out installing lightning protection on our house today, along with surge arrestors on the electrical service. For those not familiar, the lightning protection system itself is a good old lightning rod setup that protects against a fire and structural damage from a direct lightning strike. Lightning is the primary cause of house fires in the US, especially in the most storm prone areas such as Florida and Texas.

In addition, we now have industrial strength arrestors on the main service entrance. Basically like having your whole house plugged into a really good surge suppression plug strip. We no longer need to worry about shutting down our computers and electronics in a storm, because we are also protected from surges carried over the lines from indirect lightning strikes in the area. (Yes, I also have my satellite TV lines and phones lines protected at the entry to the house.)
