Lightning Protection

Got the guys from work out installing lightning protection on our house today, along with surge arrestors on the electrical service. For those not familiar, the lightning protection system itself is a good old lightning rod setup that protects against a fire and structural damage from a direct lightning strike. Lightning is the [...]

I’ll have to play with some of this stuff sometime.

From the Vault, vol. 4

Here’s another one from the vault. I’ll call this one Movie Music, not that is was. Just that it sounds like it could have been. Sounds like this one was all sequenced, no live instrument tracks.
This was circa 1990. My setup was Voyetra DOS-based MIDI software, on an original model IBM [...]

The “trust microsoft” setting

I finally have thrown in the towel and given up on trying to maintain security patches on the Windows machines on my work network in any controlled or tested way. There’s just too many to keep up with…so I’ve turned on the dreaded “trust microsoft” setting — ie, download and install all windows updates [...]

Back from Vacation

I’m back from a fun camping vacation. Took Thursday-Monday off. We went out to Lake Whitney State Park. The boys got to do their first fishing and generally had a blast sleeping in the tent and throwing rocks in the lake. Asher woke up this morning all upset, “Want to go [...]

Rock and Roll Timeline

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has a cool flash timeline. Didn’t really learn much from it, but it was fun to click around on.

Plone Intranet

After noodling with the setup for the past couple of months in my “spare time”, I’ve finally gone live on a new company Intranet at work, based on Plone. I have high hopes for it becoming more participatory than our previous site, which was Conversant-based.
This has been a difficult process for me as I [...]

Kool-Aid Beer

Anheuser-Busch is putting out a caffienated sweet “beer”. Seems silly to me. I think the market they are going for really just wants a shot of grain alcohol in some kool-aid.

RSS feeds for topics

I added RSS feeds for each topic on this site. If you are one of the few using an RSS reader, you can now subscribe to any topic individually and get any comments that have been added. It’s sort of a silly feature, as few comments as I get, but I saw it [...]

Give me levers, or give me death!

I don’t trust electronic voting. I want a good old 10 ton hunk of metal with a curtain and lots of levers, or, better yet, a paper ballot. All methods are susceptible to fraud and tampering, but I really don’t want my vote lost due to a hard drive failure and I really [...]

Debate

The debate was ok, I guess. Kerry presented himself better than I expected. Bush was as painful to listen to as I expected, repeated himself a lot and really didn’t sound like he cared much. I’ll be interested to see how the town hall format next week alters their presentation.
