RE: Doom 3
Finally got around to finishing Doom 3 over the weekend. I wanted to follow up on my earlier comments just to say that the game got much better as it near the end. The actual combat was still not all that interesting, but the visuals kept kicking it up a notch, getting much [...]

I hate big fat stupid words
Kt did a good job of drawing my attention to certain negative words that we generally don’t want to say use around the boys. We don’t have any trouble avoiding them in speech (generally) — but it’s really amazing how much we have to work around them, particularly in children’s books. Particularly the [...]

The Beatles I never knew
DW has determined that Lennon gave McCartney a sh*tty deal in the Beatles. Huh? It obvious to me that — discounting Pete Best — it’s George that really got the raw deal. According to Dave,
I thought John Lennon’s style developed over the years, but it turns out he always sang [...]

Squidly Diddly
I’ve configured the new server to use Squid as a front end and accelerator for all the services I run on the machine. I wanted to stick to only using one IP address on the machine — but also wanted the multiple web services I run to all appear on port 80.
I compiled my [...]

New concepts in architecture
I’m sitting here watching This Old House, and their insert segment is about a team of Yale architecture students that design and build a house for a low income family. Every single one of the students, graduate level architecture students, has zero building experience. They are saying things like “I’ve never even driven [...]

From the Vault, vol. 5
Another edition of “From the Vault” coming your way. These two entries from a session a did with long time friends Tim Blankenbaker (drums) and Steve Winter (bass) in 1991. Another of our high school buddies, Mike Leach, was working the sound board at The Bayou, a club in the Georgetown section of [...]

TiVo Ads
TiVo’s new advertising strategy seems to be upsetting some people.
Must admit, it doesn’t bother me. Maybe I’m substantially googlized to the point that I think it’s pretty normal to find advertising banners everywhere I look, don’t know. Notice both of those people complaining about it have google banner ads on their websites.
I think [...]

ADB/IO for USB?
There used to be a great Mac peripheral called ADB I/O. It was a simple programmable interface controller to interact with “real world” devices. I need something like this for USB. I know it exists, but am not sure where to look for it. Any ideas?

Wal-mart == evil
My buddy Jamie pointed out tonight’s Frontline, Is Wal-Mart good for america?. Looks interesting. We like Target better anyway. ![]()
If labor unions would stop wasting their time organizing for the Democrats and boycott Wal-mart, they might actually make some progress on keeping undesireable, meneal manufacturing jobs in the US.

Offensive Ad of the Month
We got this card in the mail from the local “alternative” radio station yesterday. Not only is Santa drinking whiskey and about to get a lap dance on the cover, there’s a Santa mug shot on the inside of the card. What incredibly bad taste.
