New personal server

I’ve thought about upgrading the server this site runs on a number of times lately, mostly because there’s some additional services I want to run on it for dev. work. Well, Dell finally made an offer I couldn’t refuse this weekend, and I ordered I machine that I’m going to be at pains to install as a server, because I’d rather be playing Half-Life 2 on it!

For only $749, I got a Dimension 8700 — their top-of-line desktop, with a 3.2 P4E/800 MHz FSB/1 MB cache/Hyper-Threading, 512 Meg Dual-Channel DDR2 (up to 4 gig), a motherboard with gigabit ethernet, 4 S-ATA channels and an IDE channel, 8 USB 2.0 ports, integrated 5.1 audio, plus PCI-X expansion and a PCI-X 128 meg ATI x300 SE video card and a CD-burner.

That already sounds like a pretty good deal, but they also threw in a free 19″ LCD (1280×1152 — usually around $500 upgrade), a free printer, and 2 year warranty.

So, anyway, in a few weeks, this site will be insanely fast.

Sheesh, with that kind of juice, there’s no reason not to run the site AND play Half Life 2 on it…
