CBGB faces closure over unpaid rent

CBGB may close soon. CBGB is a total dive, but one of the classic dives that spawned the NY punk scene in the late 70s. I worked there for a while I was at NYU — mostly for the on-the-cheap record label Hilly was trying to start up at the time, and in the cafe/record store he open next to the club (which is long since defunct, I believe).

I don’t think a place like this was really ever meant to last forever. While I would be sad to see it go, it’s also somewhat difficult to get behind an effort to save it on a purely historical basis. It’s not exactly an architectural jewel.

Just the same, modern music would be pretty different if CBGB hadn’t been there at the right place and the right time to provide a venue for The Ramones, Patti Smith, Television, Richard Hell, Blondie and the like.
