Audible
I’ve been enjoying my trial membership to Audible.com. I don’t think I’ll keep it up, since the monthly fee is a little more than I wish to carry — but it’s neat to have nicely bookmarkable books on my iPod for the commute. Interestingly, I find myself evaluating books based on length in the opposite fashion than I would with the “real” book. I’ve always shied away from the commitment involved in reading some really long books — but I find myself feeling like I got ripped off if the one I used my Audible credit for anything that’s not unabridged and insanely long. Anyway, so far I’ve listened to:
- Eric Schlosser’s Fast Food Nation - Weak reading and boring flow of facts with no real conclusions. Felt like a magazine article stretched well beyond all reason.
- Ken Follett’s Hornet’s Flight - Very engaging WWII thriller centering around a Danish teen swept into spying for the British.
I just started Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash, with Stephen Kings’s Dreamcatcher (22+ hours! Whohoo!) next up.
