I had no idea the Pope dying was such a big deal. It seems pretty blown out of proportion to me, but I’m not Catholic, so I guess I just don’t get it.

That’s because it’s a first in your lifetime. Most Popes are not around as
long as this one was. The Catholic Church is big on ceremony, and the Pope
is pretty much also regarded as a head of state as well as a religious
leader. - not to mention the the fact the “the pope” is the best guess
answer to many Trivial Pursuit questions (according to you at a younger age)
