Intel-Apple

Everyone’s going crazy about today’s possible Apple announcements. Lots of variables on how Apple could go about this, it’ll certainly be interesting to hear what Steve has to say. I still expect complete hardware lock-in. I seriously doubt Apple will provide a version of OS X that runs on anything but their boxes, regardless of whether it’s trivial to do so or not.

I imagine we’re going to have to live with “FAT” binaries again for awhile, too. Boy, I don’t miss those days at all.

Some mention they think Apple should go with AMD. Really doesn’t matter, does it? Obviously, if they negotiate this transition, AMD will always be an option for them. I guarantee (assuming the predictions and rumors are correct) that this will be couched as a partnership with Intel and that Intel will be assisting Apple in some financial ways in the deal. AMD’s not in a position to do that. Apple need Intel for the mobile chips, too, not really the workstation chips and Intel’s in the lead in that category at the moment.

I tell you what though, at this point, that Mac Mini would look a lot more attractive to me with a Pentium M in it than with a G4.
