USDSL

Or, to the layman, Unintented Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line. Which is what I currently have. I upgraded from SBC “Pro” to “Elite” DSL, which took effect today, and for some reason instead of the 2.4M down/512k up I was getting on speed tests with the Pro service, I’m now getting — at best — 500k down/500k up. Actually, I’m getting slower download speed than that on most test. And it feels like dialup! Ack!

I spend about 45 minutes on the line with the outsourced call center tonight retrying all the things I’d already tried, to no avail. The issue has been escalated to “line maintenance.” I have been duly informed that if they end up sending a technician out to my house and it turns out the problem is that I’m an idiot, charges may result.

Hopefully they’ll sort it out while I sleep tonight.
