Bruce Lee: A Warrior’s Journey

I happened on the movie Bruce Lee: A Warrior’s Journey on AMC quite by accident one night several weeks ago, but only saw a snippet of it — it was on again the other night and I watched it.
It’s a very well done documentary, with lots of interviews and rare footage of Lee, especially in [...]

Royal Tennenbaums

We watched The Royal Tennebaums Friday night. I really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I dosed off a couple of times during it for brief periods ( twins can be exhausting sometimes ), but I don’t really feel like I missed much.
There weren’t really many LOL moments for a comedy, but the world that it [...]

RE: Spiderman, Spiderman

I loved it. Was not dissapointed at all. There’s a few things I think could have been handled better plot-wise, but they were really minor. They didn’t quite capture Spidey’s sense of humor, and the web-slinging-as-genetic-mutation switcheroo was a definite mistake. In fact, the change to the basic setup of his [...]

Spiderman, Spiderman

I’m finally getting to go see Spiderman this afternoon. I’m excited. I’ve been really looking forward to this movie, but movies don’t really fit in our schedule lately…so I’ve had to be patient. Spiderman was one of the few comic books I bought regularly when I was young, and I was a [...]

John Carpenter’s music

This month’s Perfect Sound Forever has an analysis of John Carpenter’s film music that had me LOL.
John Carpenter has made some of my favorite movies ( Escape From New York, The Thing ), he’s also made some of the worst movies I’ve ever seen — but the crappy synth music he insists on [...]

RIP, Billy Wilder

I was sad to hear about Billy Wilder’s death. He’s was responsible for a number of my all time favorite films…specifically Stalag 17 and The Apartment. He was a fine director. He was a great writer.

Kung fu weekend

Guess it was a Kung Fu weekend…Seth watched Jackie Chan’s revisit of the genre, The Legend of Drunken Master, a mighty fine film — although I can’t agree with him about it being his best.
I was up early with the babies Sunday, so we watched Fist of Legend, one of Jet Li’s finest efforts in [...]

Rock Star

We watched Rock Star last night. Pretty lame. See Almost Famous instead, if you haven’t.
I’m usually a sucker for music movies, but this one was too predictable, lame, and ridiculous to be tolerated. They really lost me early on with just plain insanely stupid things — like having characters carry on a [...]

American Pie 2

We watched American Pie 2 last night. Very funny. Not quite as funny as the first, but still very good. Kt and I are suckers for stupid comedies, so it’s no surprise we liked it.

Harry Potter, the Movie

Saw Harry Potter on Friday afternoon. It was entertaining — but also left me a bit dry at times. There’s a lot missing from the book, but what was included was very true to it…to the point of distracting from its movie value, I think.
I’m really not sure how I would have reacted [...]

House of Frankenstein

October’s always a good month for horror movies on TV. Last night, we watched House of Frankenstein…one of the less grand late Univeral Studios horror movies. As usual, poor Boris Karloff put in a good performance that was lost in the sea of crappy ones around him. Even John Carradine ( dad [...]

Jack Arnold: Defining a Decade

I wrote an article about B-movie maker Jack Arnold, and his ability to reflect the various anxieties of the 1950s for the first issue of UNo MAS in 1990.
I was thinking of that article recently, particularly in light of what effects the current terrorist threat will have on the arts in the coming years…so I [...]

Planet of the Apes

We went to see Planet of the Apes yesterday. It was a solid sci-fi movie, with great makeup. It was entertaining. That’s about it.
As a fun summer movie, I recommend it. As a Tim Burton film, it was disappointing. It was very competently directed, but lacked his usual visual flair…Apes [...]

Short Circuit 2

Short Circuit 2 is possibly one of the lamest comedy movies ever made. Or, at least that’s my impression from the few minutes of it I’ve been able to tolerate…and, in general, reviews around the world seem to agree with my opinion.
The first Short Circuit movie was actually a cute comedy, but it’s sequel [...]

Shrek

Saw a bargain matinee of Shrek yesterday. I enjoyed it, but wasn’t overwhelmed. The graphics were stunning, but not necessarily very emotive. I still think computer animation has some hurdles to overcome. The Pixar films do a better job of integrating an artistic vision into the animation, I think…but, none-the-less, Shrek [...]
