RE: American Schmaltz

Ok, I gotta give Barry props. Yes, his songs were still schmaltz, but they updated arrangements for the American Idol finalists and it wasn’t that bad. Mostly. "Mandy" still was painful.

American Schmaltz

It’s Barry Manilow night on American Idol. I thought Neil Sedaka was a bit of a stretch last year, but Barry Manilow? I wonder who’s going to get stuck slogging through “I Can’t Smile Without You”.

Echostar vs. Viacom

Interesting intrigue in the TV world. I hope Echostar wins. This will make a big difference moving into the future, and might pave the way to a la carte channel choices. I fear, however, they’ll lose, and we’ll be locked in by the media conglomerates moving forward. Glad I’m not a [...]

So, Oswald and Stanley are OK, but when are my boys going to be old enough to watch Clint and John with me?

The Soul of a Man

Wow. I just finished watching The Soul of a Man, the second installment of PBS’s series “The Blues”, directed by Wim Wenders. It was every bit as strong as Scorcese’s opening night film was weak.
Wenders meandered through portraits of Skip James and J.B. Lenoir — two relatively obscure but influential blues men — [...]

The Blues starts Sunday

Reminder, The Blues starts Sunday on PBS. I’m really excited. I wish they would spread it out over 7 weeks, rather than 7 nights in a row, but I’m still excited. I fear that my domination of the TV next week will cause friction at home, but I hope not…I feel I’ve [...]

The Blues

I’m really looking forward to PBS’s The Blues series — produced by Martin Scorsese…with installments directed by Clint Eastwood, Wim Wenders, and other filmmakers with a true love of the blues. I love the blues, but have been in a phase where I haven’t been listening to it a lot…I expect this show will [...]

RIP, John Ritter

Seth points out that John Ritter died also. I’m more or less neutral on John Ritter, but reading the obit, I found out for the first time that he was Tex Ritter’s son. Interesting.

Monster House

We discovered Monster House on TV quite by accident yesterday. What a great show! It’s like Junkyard Wars meets Trading Spaces…5 builders (different every week) do a complete revision of a house in 5 days while the home owners live in an RV out front, only able to see what they can see [...]

Top 5 things I learned from American Idol

5. Ford will do anything to sell cars.
4. There’s something to be said for professional makeovers.
3. The unmodulated, impromtu key change is severly overused in modern popular music…due to it’s ability to feign a heightened sense of drama in an otherwise repetitive song.
2. Neil Sedaka is still alive.
1. Bigger is better.

American Idol - Go Ruuuuuuben!

I hope Ruben wins tonight. We voted. Well, Kt did. Several times. I don’t like Clay…he has a powerful voice, but I think lacks the subtleties of a great singer. I thought he was really weak last night, as a matter of fact. His “Here, There and Everywhere” had [...]
