My stamp on the Library of Congress

Just happened upon a notation on the web that the Library of Congress’s collection finding aids were available in PDF format online now. They probably have been for a while, but I had never thought to look. I did a fellowship in the Library’s Music Division in the Summer of 1993, during which [...]

Dental Hygienists don’t work on Friday

This was news to me, but apparently Dental Hygienists do not work on Friday. At least around where I live. I called about 6 dentists and dental clinics in my area for a checkup and most of them are closed on Friday, or do not have Hygienists there to do cleanings. Friday’s [...]

Pope

I had no idea the Pope dying was such a big deal. It seems pretty blown out of proportion to me, but I’m not Catholic, so I guess I just don’t get it.

Sand art

Seth linked to this incredible sand art demo the other day. It’s a pretty amazing performance.

That joke is so tired

I do as much of the client support I have to do at work from my desk as I possibly can. Which is a lot, thanks to VNC. But, I often do end up visiting someone’s desk to do some work on their machine, install some software, or whatever.
And everyone, I mean everyone, [...]

They come in threes

They say celebrity deaths come in threes. Hunter, Sandra Dee and John Raitt make for an interesting trio. Particularly the seemingly opposite public personas of Hunter and Sandra.

The Buzzard Pole

A major utility thoroughfare parallels one of the highways I drive to work for a mile or so. The poles are the traditional exposed steel frame towers. One of them is the favorite resting place for about 100 buzzards. It’s been that way as long as I’ve been doing this drive. The [...]

Snow

It’s snowing here at the moment. Big wet flakes, mostly melting on contact but it’s sticking a little on the grass and cars. It’s pretty. I’d consider it a lousy snow if I lived up North, but I’ll take what I can get around here.

Vacant threats of the publishing industry

I’m really tired of trade publications. I’ve managed to successfully get off the circulation roles of a number of the more annoying ones, and limited it to a couple of “freebie” subscriptions that I actually read now and then…but every month, I get the extra cover on the mag, or emails from them, or [...]

RE: Perl

Seth fixed up the Perl script for me. It’s nice and clean and easy to read now, also easier to configure sites, too. Thanks!

RE: [expletive deleted] Spammers

Interestingly, after spending a little more time looking over the apache logs on my hijacked proxy, it appears that about 80% of the traffic was from a small number spammers who discovered the open proxy and the other 20% was traffic using the proxy to spoof ad-clicks to many of the major ad servers (though [...]

Offensive Ad of the Month

We got this card in the mail from the local “alternative” radio station yesterday. Not only is Santa drinking whiskey and about to get a lap dance on the cover, there’s a Santa mug shot on the inside of the card. What incredibly bad taste.
